Are We There Yet? How To Keep Kids Occupied On A Long Road Trip
Even with all the technology available today, kids may still have a hard time keeping themselves occupied on a long road trip. Pack smart for your children with healthy snacks, fully charged phones and tablets, and lists of fun games to play on the road. Also, break up the time they spend on their electronics in hopes that it may help keep them from being grumpy later.
Stopping for gas and taking the kids inside a gas station for a bathroom break can be like opening Pandora's box. You are not alone if you and your children are tempted by the candy and snacks available. It's hard not to notice the way their eyes bulge as they see the aisles of candy and the "Mommy can I have it" begins almost instantaneously. Be resolute with the kids before you enter the store and try to guide them directly to the bathrooms. Pack healthy snacks for the trip and try to feed them before you make a stop. Pack dried fruit and nuts along with plenty of small water bottles to keep them satiated. Baby carrots and string cheese are also great kid-friendly choices. Of course, giving in to a little piece of candy is not a crime either.
As a member of AAA, you can save up to 30% on select Dell configurations, like the new Inspiron 15. It's just one more reason to love your membership. Download games and learning activities on your new Dell tablet and set the kids up with ear buds for the trip. If your children already have their own cell phones, make sure that they have their chargers and that they fully charge their electronics before any long car ride. There is a good possibility that you will not hear a peep from the backseat for hours while they play their games on their phones and tablets.
Try to break up the amount of time the kids are plugged in with old school road games. You may even want to offer a small prize to entice them to play. Remember the counting game? It's easy, but never really gets old. Decide together what everyone wants to count, whether it is a color or billboard and then play together.
Although having a quiet vehicle may seem like a dream come true, keep an eye out for what is going on in the back seat. Make sure kids have not slipped out of their car seats or unbuckled their seatbelts. With long trips, kids are more likely to move around and may unbuckle while you are not paying attention. Also, review each state's seatbelt laws to make sure you are abiding by their rules as you travel. An unexpected ticket can spoil a trip.
Do not forget to schedule a pre-trip inspection on your vehicle. Visit one of our many AAA Car Care locations and let us check everything out before you travel. Our team will make sure your fluids are topped off and that everything is in working order.
We also offer Travel Insurance to provide you additional peace of mind before you start your engine. With a full range of coverage options available, we have plenty to choose from for your trip. Call us today at 1-800-444-8691 and schedule an appointment with one of our AAA Travel Experts.
